Keiran glanced down at his watch as they walked back through the halls towards the Gryffindor common room. It was nine thirty which meant he had all of thirty minutes to get Mercy back and get back to the Slytherin common room before curfew at ten. He would definitely be pushing it, but it was worth it having been able to spend time hiding in a darkened nook in the courtyard with her. He was getting tired of always hiding though…he just hadn’t figured out the perfect way to tell Mercy that he no longer wanted their relationship to be ‘open’. It wasn’t like he went around dating other people anyways.
Keiran stopped in front of the Fat Lady painting and leaned in to give Mercy one last kiss goodnight before making a mad dash down to the dungeons when he heard the argument. And one of the voices was all too familiar.
”No Justin, I do not want to ‘take the night to sleep on it”. I’m breaking up with you, can’t you understand that?” Katerina was telling her boyfriend, the Hufflepuff jerk. He just wasn’t taking no for an answer. Without warning he grabbed her wrists and pushed her against the wall. ”You can’t break up with me, I won’t let you. I love you.” He told her, scaring her more than she’d ever been in her life. ”Justin you’re hurting me, let go of my wrists!” She said, fighting off the urge to panic. ”Promise me you’ll give up on this breakup business. We belong together, why can’t you see that?” The boy was clearly insane. Why hadn’t she noticed that before? Maybe it was because she was just desperate to find someone else other than John to think about. ”Fine! Will you let me go now?” She said, trying to tug her hands from his grasp. There were definitely going to be bruises there come morning.
”That doesn’t sound good, we should do something.” Keiran said, instantly concerned for Katerina. From what he had heard she definitely wanted out but the guy was just too psycho to allow it. He knew if it were his sister in that situation he would be punching the guys lights out for sure. Keiran was about to go intervene when Justin came walking around the corner, a sick satisfied smile across his face. It was then that he heard Katerina’s sobs and was stopped in his tracks. He could deal with his sister crying, she didn’t do it often, but he had no idea what to do when someone else was crying. He gave Mercy a desperate look, and glanced at his watch again. He was going to be late, again.

This was the moment that Mercy always hated: saying goodbye to Keiran. Though they always managed to squeeze in every spare second that they could, working the time in to be with each other was difficult when you had to keep a low profile. The last thing she wanted was one of her brothers spotting them and running back to tell their father that she was still hanging around Keiran. Only their closest friends really knew about their relationship, but that wasn't exactly enough for Mercy.
She was growing weary of hiding and she hated the whole open relationship thing... but what else were they supposed to do? Besides, as much as she hoped that he harbored more than lust for her, Mercy still had a fear of rejection when it came to Keiran. She just cared about him too much to lose him. Of course that was probably stupid. If he didn't have feelings for her, then they wouldn't be in any sort of relationship, would they? She wasn't sure of anything anymore except for the fact that she wanted more from Keiran than an open relationship. Ugh, just thinking about him seeing other girls made her want to punch someone in the face. She just wished that she could convince her father that Keiran wasn't such a bad guy. Maybe then she would have the courage to tall Keiran that she wanted more out of their relationship.
When they stopped in front of the entrance to the Gryffindor common room, she was all too happy to squeeze in one last kiss before they had to go their separate ways. She was completely ready for the kiss too... her hands sliding up to rest on his chest and a devilish gleam in her blue eyes. Then he stopped and her heart sank practically to the floor. "Wha-" she started to protest, but then she heard the voices too.
Standing there and listening, she knew exactly who was just around the corner and her blood started to boil as their argument continued. He wouldn't let her break up with him?! That bastard. Hearing Kat crying out about him hurting her, Mercy was just about to round the corner and give that bastard a piece of her mind, even as Keiran was insisting that they should do something. Just like that though, it was over and Justin rounded the corner, walking away from Mercy's best friend and leaving her there in tears.
In that moment, Mercy was just too angry to think clearly. "I'm going to kill him," she insisted, drawing out her wand as she went to walk by Keiran so that she could catch up with the fucker. How dare he tell Kat that she couldn't break up with him?! He was going to pay for laying his hands on her; she was going to make sure of it if it was the last thing she ever did! She'd known that scuzzball was nothing but a worthless piece of shit that needed to be curb stomped!

Katerina couldn’t believe the mess she was in. That hadn’t gone at all how she had planned, instead of successfully breaking up with him she had agreed to keep going out with him just to get him to stop hurting her. He had never hurt her before and that’s what really scared her. Her wrists were throbbing from how hard he had been gripping them and there was already some bruises popping up. Kat continued to hide in the little alcove, crying harder than she ever remembered doing so until she heard the woman’s voice.
“That boy was positively dreadful dear. No wonder you wanted to break things off with him.” She said, making Kat look up startled to find that the four ladies in the tea party painting were all giving her sympathetic looks. ”Yes, we all see why you would want to be rid of him.” said yet another of the ladies, one wearing an obnoxiously yellow hat with white daisies. ”He needs a good bout of boils I’d say, the fernunculus charm would work wonders for that.” The lady with the pink floppy brimmed hat added. The lady with a smallish purple top hat nodded ”Oh yes, and a smaller head. His seems rather inflated, you could always use reducio for that.” she said with a definite wink.
The first lady, who was the only one without a hat but was wearing a rather horrid chartreus dress gave her a small smile and said ”Don’t worry dear, that boy is just a bad egg, not your fault at all.” Pink hat lady butted in then and said ”You could always try a repelling spell, I used one on an ex-husband of mine once.” Chartreus dress lady shook her head at this ”Yes but Mabel that didn’t work.” she said giving “Mabel” a look, one that was returned ”That doesn’t mean she couldn’t try it Wilma.” The whole time they were all speaking Katerina just kept looking between them wondering how she had gotten herself into this mess.
Clearing her throat to get them to stop arguing she said ”Thank you for all of you’re advice, but I think I should get going now…” The last thing she needed was advice from people who weren't even alive. The one good thing about their banter was it had distracted her enough to where she was no longer bawling her eyes out. Tears were just slowly rolling down her cheeks now.
Meanwhile Keiran grabbed Mercy to keep her from going off after Justin. ”Oh no you don’t. You’re needed in that direction.” He said pointing towards where Katerina still was, though her crying seemed to have lessened. ”I’ll follow him, and if I get the chance I’ll make sure he doesn’t regret this night okay?” And he wasn’t just saying that. He hated people who thought they could abuse others to get what they wanted, or just because they could.

Mercy shot a look at Keiran when he stopped her from going after the prick herself. She knew he was right, Katerina did need her more right then, but nothing would give her more satisfaction than breaking Justin's nose. "Fine," she said, not the least bit happy. "But the first chance I get, I'm punching him in the face, and there's no way in hell I'm letting you stop me again." Not wanting to give herself the chance to change her mind, Mercy took hold of the front of his shirt and pulled him in for one last kiss. Despite her bitterness, she still felt her gut fill with butterflies right then.
"Go, before you get in trouble again," she said with a sigh as she pulled back. Turning around, she started to walk back toward Katerina, trying her best to quell the anger bubbling up inside of her. When she rounded the corner, she found Kat there with tears running down her face. She wanted to tell Kat that she wasn't going to let her see that bastard again. She was breaking up with him, even if Mercy had to break up with him for her. When she saw Kat though, she decided that she would wait to tell her these things.
She also wanted to say "I told you he was an asshole," but she refrained. That wasn't going to help at all. "Where did he hurt you?" she demanded, but gently so. The look in her blue eyes said it all. She'd heard everything... or at least enough to know that Justin had hurt her and that she wasn't going to be breaking ties with him quite so easily. Approaching her best friend, her brows rose as if prompting her to show Mercy exactly what Justin had done.

Keiran kissed her back without a moment’s hesitation. He was always ready to kiss her, it was one of his favorite passtimes…besides Quidditch that is. When she released him he had a giant grin on his face. ”Don’t worry bout me, it’s you who needs to not get into trouble.” He told her, winking as he began to walk in the direction Justin had gone. The guy was going to wish he hadn’t ever met Katerina and treated her the way he had, Keiran was going to make sure of that.
Katerina was just about to walk away from the portrait of the women at their tea party when Mercy came around the corner. She was shocked for a moment, having thought that she was the only one still out, but then she remembered Mercy disappearing earlier and figured she had been canoodling with Keiran somewhere. Before she could even get a word out though, Wilma looked at Mercy and got a broad grin on her face ”Well hello there dear!” but then Mabel elbowed her in the side and gave her painting friend a look and they all conspicuously went back to drinking their tea.
Part of Kat wanted to deny that Justin had done anything to her, tell Mercy that she was fine. But the only reason her friend would ask that kind of question would be because she overheard what had gone on. With a resigned sigh she held out her throbbing wrists where purplish black bruises were already visible against her tan skin. Those were going to be hard to cover, and she really didn’t want to have to go to the infirmary to get them taken care of…that would just lead to a lot of uneasy questions. How did she tell people her boyfriend was abusive? It was one thing telling Mercy, she hadn’t liked the guy to begin with, but everyone else? It seemed like a nightmare.

Mercy glanced over at the portrait as she was greeted in a rather bright way, but just turned back to Kat, ignoring the ladies. Seeing the bruises on her friend's wrists didn't make her the least bit happy. As a matter of fact, she nearly turned right back around to go after him again, but she tried to remember what Keiran had said to her. Kat needed her more.
Gently taking Kat's forearms so that she could observe the bruises, Mercy's eyes sparked dangerously. "Right..." she said, taking her by the hand and leading her toward the portrait of the fat lady. "We're telling Cailan." Mercy knew that her cousin, who also happened to be Kat's half brother, wasn't going to be the least but happy about this. Once Cailan found out, Justin was as good as dead. It wasn't just Cailan he would have to worry about either; Eric and Aiden would have their best friend's back as well.
Mercy didn't care how much Kat hated the idea of telling someone. It had to be done. Even if Kat hated her for it, Mercy wasn't going to let that douchebag continue on with such madness. Of course, once Cailan found out, it was only a matter of time before Eli and Elyse found out as well. Neither of them would be happy and Eli was going to be an awful sight to take in, but Justin deserved everything he had coming to him. "He's such an asshole, Kat. Cailan will make sure he's as good as dead, you know it. You deserve so much better."

One look at her friends face and Katerina knew that all hopes of keeping this quiet had gone out the window along with her ability to stand up for herself against Justin. God she had felt so helpless standing there, pushed up against the wall with his hands tightening painfully around her wrists. Just thinking about it made her want to start crying all over again… and she wasn’t one to normally cry. ”No. Mercy…” Katerina tried to say as Mercy began to drag her towards the portrait of the fat lady. She knew there was no use in trying to stop her, but she didn’t want to just go along without trying.
”Mercy please, don’t tell him. He’ll just tell dad and then he and Elyse will come down here and it will be made into some huge ordeal. It will be so embarrassing. Everyone will know how weak I am.” She said, trying to sway her friend from telling her brother. And by everyone Kat totally meant John. She had realized over the last few weeks that she had just been fooling herself thinking that she could deny her feelings for him by dating someone else.
And look just where that had gotten her. Dating some psycho that didn’t even bat an eye at hurting someone he so called ‘loved’. You don’t do that to someone you love. Ugh, she just wanted to go upstairs and shower for an eternity, not sit through having to tell her brother and probably Aiden and Eric, what Justin had done and said to her just a few moments ago. Was it too much to ask that they both just try to forget it happened?

"NO KAT, everyone will know how much of a douchebag he is and how smart you were to tell someone about it before it was too late," Mercy snapped. She didn't mean to sound so angry. She wasn't mad at Kat, she was pissed that Justin would even think about touching her friend like that. "Do you know how much worse this could get if you don't put an end to it now?" She stopped right in front of the portrait of the fat lady. "She's right you know," the fat lady said.
"SEE?" Mercy said, happy to have even the portrait backing her up. "Tiddlywinks," she then said and the portrait swung open for them. Inside, Lydia was sitting in one of the squashy red chairs, her legs pulled up and a book in her hands. John and Jared were on either side of her, bothering her and making fun of whatever it was she was reading. "Would you two go away?" she snapped at them only for John to snatch the book out of her hand.
"Seriously, how can you read this stuff, Lydia?" he asked her, even as she shot out of her chair to try and get her book back. "Give it back, John!" she seethed, trying to snatch it back. He was taller than her though and just held it high above her head. "No, Lydia. I'm saving you from this smut that has been corrupting your mind. You'll thank me one day." He tossed the book to Jared and, when Lydia went to go after him, Jared just tossed it back to John who laughed. He stopped laughing when Lydia punching him in the gut though.
"Oww!" he said, doubling over and dropping Lydia's book. Jared doubled over with laughter and John, rubbing the spot where he'd been punched, looked over to Eric and Aiden who were hanging out with Cailan and supposedly doing homework. "She hit me!" John said to the two. Eric was Head Boy and Aiden was a prefect. He expected to see some action! "Good, that means I don't have to be the one to hit you. Now shut up," Eric said, looking up from his piles of books and papers. If Lydia hadn't punched John, Eric had been ready to get up and get the book back himself.
A satisfied smile crossed Lydia's face and she snatched her book up off of the ground just as Mercy came into the common room, dragging Kat behind her. "What happened?" she asked, setting her book down on the chair and walking over to her best friends. Her brows knitted together in a concerned look. Kat looked distraught and Mercy... Mercy looked pissed. For a moment, none of the guys seemed to care. None of them wanted to deal with a crying, hormonal, teenage girl. They just didn't know how to. "Look at what Justin did to her," Mercy said, holding up Kat's bruised wrists for Lydia to see. Lydia took hold of Kat's hands, her own anger building up as well. "Oh my god, Kat! When the hell did he do this to you?!"
That was all it took for Cailan to be out of his chair. When you heard someone asking your little sister about a guy doing something to her, it was time to see what the hell was going on. "Get out of my way," he said to Eric and Jared who had come to investigate as well. He practically pushed them to get by. Both Lydia and Mercy stepped to the side so that he could see. It was rare for Cailan to get angry, but when he saw Kat's wrists... not a single person in that room wanted to be in Justin's shoes. "What the hell happened?!"
She knew that Kat might try to make excuses, so Mercy spoke up. "She tried breaking things off with Justin out in the hall and he wouldn't let her," she said, crossing her arms. "Kei- I heard the whole thing." Eric gave Mercy a suspicious look as he came over, knowing full well that she nearly admitted to being out there with Keiran, even though she wasn't supposed to be anywhere near him. Both John and Jared had looks of concern on their face, but there was something little deeper in John's expression. He looked just about as angry as Cailan. Silently, he looked at both Jared and Killian, as if he had a train of thought that he needed to share with them when they were alone.

Katerina had known that it would be pointless to try and talk Mercy out of doing something once she set her mind to it. She was like a dog with a bone, she just didn’t give up. Of course, any other day Katerina would have loved that characteristic in her friend but tonight was not a night she wanted to be paraded into the common room and have everyone see how weak he had been. She should never have tried to break up with him in a dark corner in the first place but she hadn’t for a second believed he would have hurt her the way he had.
When the fat lady agreed with Mercy, Kat threw the portrait a dirty look before going inside. This night was just going soooo fine and dandy. They walked in only to find Jared, Killian and John tormenting Lydia over the book she happened to be reading. ”A Night with a Vampire? Really Lydia? You have this wide variety of sex books to read and you chose to read one about vampires?” Killian said, reading the cover as it sat on the floor where John had dropped it. Aiden of course looked up at that. ”Yeah, why not werewolves or something a lot less gay. Vampires are so boring especially since they don’t like garlic, oh and don’t forget they’re deathly allergic to sunlight.” He said, totally ignoring John’s whining about Lydia hitting him. He deserved several good punches anyways.
Of course everyone noticed them when Lydia spotted them and her tearstained face. Katerina groaned inwardly as Mercy proclaimed loudly that Justin had hurt her. Holding out her wrist for evidence. She felt like she was on exhibit or something the way they all crowded in to get a good look. Feeling sick she pulled her arm out of Mercy’s grip and tried to back out of the close circle of people around her…but then her brother stepped in. Of course she had expected his reaction, but still, she didn’t always need him fighting her battles for her.
Rubbing her wrists gently she shot Mercy a glare as she spoke for her, like she didn’t trust Kat to tell him the truth. She was right to though, Kat had had no intention of telling her brother that Justin had hurt her because she tried to break up with him. She had wanted to deal with the situation on her own, but that ship had sailed. Didn’t mean she still couldn’t try. ”It’s okay, I can handle it on my own. He just scared me is all, next time he won’t be able to.” Kat told Cailan with more confidence than she felt. Right that minute all she felt like doing was going to the bathroom and throwing up. In fact, her face was turning a little pale and had a visible green tint to it.
Athena, who had walked in from the dormitory that they shared took one look at Katerina's wrists and said "Who do I need to kill?" She asked, her face dead serious. Growing up with a father who bullied her and abused her because she didn't fit into his ideal view of a child, and a mother who ignored and emotionally abused her, she didn't take kindly to others hurting the ones she loved and cared about. Justin had definitely better watch out, he had messed with the wrong girl. Katerina practically had an army behind her.

"You don't need to handle it on your own," Cailan said, fuming and pointing his finger in Kat's face. "That prick is a dead man walking." He'd known that little douche nozzle was nothing but bad news and he could kick himself for not intervening sooner. He'd hoped that Kat would have listened to her friends about Justin.
"That little shit stain, Justin," Cailan said to Athena, pulling out his wand and heading for the portrait of the Fat Lady. "Where are you going?" Mercy called after him. "I'm going to go beat the shit out of that bastard, that's where I'm going." Eric rubbed the back of his neck, knowing that his cousin was pissed. He was torn though... as Head Boy, he shouldn't allow Cailan to leave the common room after hours let alone let him go track down another student and attack him. Justin had it coming though and Eric wanted nothing more than to follow him and help him beat the shit out of Justin. Looking at Aiden, he knew they shouldn't... but he had to back up their friend.
"Stay here," Eric said to the others. If they got caught, they were in deep enough shit as it was. Heading toward the portrait hole after Cailan, Eric knew exactly what he was getting himself into, but it would be worth it. "No way, I'm going with you," Lydia said, following after them. John and Jared clearly wanted to follow as well, but looking back at Kat, John refrained. He would enlist the help of Jared and Killian to get back at Justin later.
Jared went to follow, but Eric turned around and shot him a look. "STAY," he demanded, pointing a finger at his brother. "What about her?" Jared complained, pointing at Lydia. "I trust her more not to get us caught. And she throws a better punch than you do..." With that, Eric and Lydia slipped through the portrait hole while Jared stayed behind, mumbling something about it not being fair.
John was about to say something to Kat when he noticed a few third years intruding in their circle. "Get out of here. Haven't you ever seen a bruise before? I can give you one for your face, if you like. Who wants to volunteer to go first?" he threatened, watching the other students scatter back up to their dormitories. "Nosy little shits..." he said, turning back to Kat.

Katerina flinched a little as Cailan pointed his finger in her face. He was pissed, seriously pissed. She hadn't seen her brother this angry since a third year shoved her in the dirt in her first year, but even that paled in comparison. She almost rolled her eyes at his use of "dead man walking" but had the distinct feeling that that would be the wrong reaction at the moment. Yeah she was pissed at that she had had such bad judgement when it came to Justin and that she had ignored everyone's thoughts on her choice of boyfriends, and she was pissed that she hadn't stood up for herself a few moments earlier and maybe kneed him in the groin or something but she hadn't thought about those things while he was squeezing her her wrists so hard it felt that they might break.
Of course, everyone else wanted in on beating up Justin as well. Athena and Aiden didn't waste any time following her brother, Eric and Lydia out of the portrait hole and out into the corridor to find Justin. Great. They had managed to make a spectacle out of her before they left. Now everyone that had been remaining in the common room when she and Mercy had came in were now staring at her. Katerina was grateful though that John yelled at them to clear out. She just couldn't deal with being stared at right then.
Katerina laughed a little at John calling them 'nosy little shits' and she looked at him and said "You can't say much, you were one of them just a few moments ago." She looked around and noticed that out of all of her friends only John and Mercy had remained with her in the dorm, everyone else had gone out in search of Justin. Great, they would probably get detention because of this. They had just better not blame her for it, it's not like she told them to go beat the guy up.
