"Mom, have you seen Felix?""Jared, how many times do I have to tell you to keep that thing in his tank, where he belongs?" Sophia sighed as she folded some of the last minute laundry for the kids. Everybody was rushing about the house, trying to find last minute things to pack despite Sophia's insistence that they get everything ready the day before. As usual, her suggestion was met with rolling eyes and "okay, mom" by most of her children and... well, by now the others were like her secondary children. "He's not a thing, he's a snake and his name is Felix. I can't just keep him cooped up in his tank all day! He needs to get out and stretch his legs!""He doesn't have legs, he's a snake," Sophia pointed out, handing Jared a pile of his folded laundry. Despite how neatly she had folded it, she was sure it would just wind up thrown into his trunk in a ball anyway. "And you better go and find him before grandma tries to shove him down the garbage disposal again."At that thought, Jared's eyes widened and he practically ran from the laundry room. "Grandma?!" he called out. "Have you seen Felix?!" Sophia stood there for a moment and pinched the bridge of her nose as she heard Ethel answer from the kitchen. "Who's Felix? Is that your gay friend?""I don't have a gay friend, grandma, Felix is my snake!""THERE'S A SNAKE IN THE HOUSE?!" Sophia sighed again and shook her head as she pulled more clothes from the dryer. Upstairs, Mercy walked into the bedroom she and Lizzie shared and stopped in the doorway, her folded laundry in her hands. "What the hell are you guys doing? Get out," she demanded, watching Eric, John, and Aiden searching around her room. "We can't find Felix," John explained, pushing the pillows and cover off of Mercy's freshly made bed without bothering to fix them when it was obvious that Felix wasn't there. "Seriously? You're making a mess!" Picking up one of the pillows off of the floor, she whacked John in the back with it. "Felix?!" Cailan called from one of the other rooms, as if the snake was going to answer or come running. "Why don't you do something useful for once and help us look," Eric said to Mercy, climbing up the ladder to look in the loft. Cursing them under her breath, Mercy also started to look around the room. It wasn't exactly the first time Felix went missing and it certainly wouldn't be the last. Meanwhile, in Mercy and Lizzie's bathroom, Lydia was finally able to enjoy her shower. Unfortunately, she'd lost the battle over who got to shower first and wound up being the last one to get in. Sighing and just relaxing under the spray of water, she never wanted to get the hell out out. Rinsing the conditioner out of her hair, Lydia then proceeded to squeeze soap onto her shower pouf. Washing herself off, she was completely content and closed her eyes as she let the water just wash over her. When she felt something touching her feet though, Lydia's eyes shot open. When she looked down, a blood curdling scream echoed around her. In her panic, she hardly even realized that the scream came from her as she backed herself into the cold wall of the shower, her heart in her throat and her stomach plunging. Aiden honestly didn’t understand why Jared had to let his damn snake out today of all days. Of course he loved tormenting the girls with it, sometimes sneaking it into their dresser or their bags along with the other boys but he hated having to search for the elusive sucker when he escaped. ”Ohhhhh Felix, come out, come out wherever you areee.” He said as he knelt to peer under the girls’ dressers, where the snake could be hiding in the darkness. Having no luck there he moved towards the couches.
”Y’all have way too much stuff in this room! It is entirely too easy for a snake to find a place to hide in here.” Killian said as he walked in from searching one of the other rooms in the house. True to fashion he went to all the places that had already been looked at and messed them up further as he assured himself that the snake really wasn’t there. Lizzie walked in as he was shaking her pillow out of its freshly laundered pillow case and she about dropped her pile of clean clothes. ”Stop that! That damned snake is not in my pillow case!” She shouted at him, Killian just shrugged and continued on doing the same thing with her other pillow.
Aiden was just pulling one of the couch cushions out when he heard Lydia’s blood curdling scream from the bathroom. He barged into the bathroom without thinking and immediately covered his eyes with his left hand upon seeing Lydia naked in the shower. He slowly walked towards the sound of the running water and groped for the door, pulled it open and went to bend down to grope the shower floor with his right hand for the snake. Aiden moved a bit, but the floor was wet from the shower spurting water all over it and he ended up toppling into the shower with Lydia, his eyes flying open and getting a full show as Felix slithered over his arm.

When Aiden barged into the bathroom... well, that didn't exactly stop Lydia's screaming. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" she yelled at him as he opened the shower door and slipped right into the shower. When he opened his eyes, she promptly threw her soap covered shower pouf right at his face. "DON'T LOOK AT ME!" As she was about to dart out of the shower, however she slipped on the sudsy pouf and landed right on top of Aiden... but not before smacking her head on the shower knob.
"OW!!!! SON OF A FUCKING BITCH!" she yelled. She wasn't allowed to curse, but right then... well, she couldn't exactly hold it back. She couldn't even get off of Aiden right away because she was holding her now bleeding head. This wasn't exactly how she had imagined her first intimate moment with her crush. Everything had happened so fast, but Mercy had rushed into the bathroom in time to see the entire thing. "OH MY GOD!" she said, grabbing Lydia's towel and rushing over to help her friend out of the shower, quickly covering her with it. While Lydia was holding back tears, she gripped the towel with one hand, her other hand still on the cut on her forehead. "Let me see it," Mercy insisted, pulling Lydia's hand away from her forehead.
Looking over her shoulder, her pretty blue eyes looked like they were ready to shoot laser beams at Aiden. "GET OUT!" she yelled at him. Lydia's embarrassment only grew worse when she couldn't hold back the tears anymore and she started to cry. Eric walked over to help his now soaked friend out of the shower, but they weren't going fast enough for Mercy's liking. "NOW! ALL OF YOU! AND TAKE THAT STUPID SNAKE WITH YOU!"
"What happened?!" Sophia demanded, suddenly in the doorway as she'd come running from the laundry room. Jared was right behind her. Taking in the sight before her, she approached Lydia and Mercy. "JARED, PUT THAT THING BACK WHERE IT BELONGS!" she scolded, approaching Lydia and taking a look at the cut on her head. It wasn't too bad; she could fix it up easily. As a healer at St. Mungo's, Sophia was an expert at such things. Not to mention, she'd seen many injuries amongst her children over the years. James had come running too, but upon seeing Lydia in a towel, he started to usher the boys out. "Let's go. Get your packing done... or find something else to do," he insisted. Turning around, he started to push John out of the room as he was trying to peek into the bathroom. "What happened? Let me see," John insisted. "No, get out."

Seriously if Aiden had known this would turn out this way he wouldn’t have run it to save the day. He would have stayed out in the bedroom and let her scream her head off about a harmless snake. As it was, he now had his eyes full of stinging bathwash from being hit in the face with a shower loofah. And he was being weighed down by Lydia herself. He was slightly worried cuz he had heard some part of her hit something rather hard but he could hardly open his eyes at the moment. ”Can you stop screaming in my ear? All I was trying to do was get the damn snake. Maybe next time don’t scream bloody murder over a harmless snake!” He told her irritated as he tried to clear the soap from his eyes.
He was completely and hopelessly soaked now, and he took Eric’s hand as he offered it to him. He glanced at Lydia, his eyes now red from being burned by the soap, and he felt the tiniest bit bad about yelling at her when he saw the gash on her forehead. In the doorway he saw Killian looking a little ashen and had the sneaking suspicion that he was the one who had put it in the bathroom to begin with. Killian had followed Mercy into the bathroom and was now feeling slightly guilty, maybe he shouldn’t have played that prank on Lydia after all…but how was he supposed to know it would turn out like it did? Resolving himself to buy her something to make up for it he followed James’ suggestion and went to go finish his packing, Aiden right behind him.
Kat, Lizzie and Emily crowded into the bathroom around Lydia, Mercy and Sophia. ”Oh my goodness. I can’t believe that nasty thing was in our bathroom! I wish you hadn’t let him keep that thing mom.” Elizabeth said taking in her friends gash on her forehead. It wasn’t too terribly bad, but it was bleeding and that was enough for her. Katerina, who had thoughts of one day becoming a healer like Sophia asked ”Is there anything I can do to help?” while Emily sat down on the toilet to watch the proceedings.

"Nice going," Eric said to Aiden, waiting until his father had walked off to start laughing. "Would you just tell me what happened?" John asked. "Yeah, what happened?" Cailan asked, having missed the entire thing as well. Jared took Felix back, allowing him to wrap around his hand. "Did she scare you, Felix?" Jared asked, his concern mostly for his snake. "He's probably deaf now... poor thing. I'm going to have to teach him sign language."
As requested, Eric and Jared gladly told Cailan and John about what had transpired in the bathroom, Eric mimicking Lydia's scream. They were practically doubled over in laughter. Eric already couldn't wait to tell Jake later that day. "So... Aiden... how much did you see?" John asked, a devilish smile on his face as everyone disbanded to gather the rest of their things.
Back in the bathroom, Lydia was still crying. It wasn't just because her head hurt either. She was also incredibly embarrassed by the entire situation, especially with Aiden having seen her naked like that. Ugh, and she'd fallen right on top of him! "Relax, sweetheart," Sophia said to her, her heart truly going out to Lydia. "He was only trying to help, Lydia. Elizabeth, hush. It's only a snake. It's not like it's going to destroy your bathroom."
Of course Lydia knew that Aiden was only trying to help, but still! "He saw everything, I know he did," she sniffed, wiping at the tears in her eyes. Sophia smiled a little when Kat asked her if there was anything she could do to help. "Yes, dear. Run into my bathroom. In the medicine cabinet, there's a bottle labelled "Essence of Dittany." Bring it here."
"Look at the bright side, Lydia... I'm sure he liked what he saw," Mercy said, trying to cheer her friend up. "He's bound to ask you out now." Both Sophia and Lydia shot her a look. "Mercy!" Sophia scolded. "What?! It's true! Give him a little show of what he can have and he'll come running back for more." Mercy shrugged her shoulders and Sophia sighed. "I sincerely hope that's not your method of winning a boy over," she said to her eldest daughter.

Aiden was still slightly in shock over what had gone on in the girls’ bathroom and just followed them as the other’s talked about it. Of course he vividly remembered falling into the shower and looking right up at Lydia’s completely naked body, but right after that he had soap thrown into his eyes and only felt her laying on top of him. It was something that, in any other circumstances, he would have shared in detail with his friends…but it was Lydia they were talking about. To shut them all up he gave them a pointed look and said ”You all wouldn’t be asking if it had been one of your sisters instead of Lydia…I’m not going to tell you any of that…it’s just wrong.” He normally wasn’t the knight in shining armor type, but right then he was determined to save whatever dignity Lydia had left by now gossiping like a school girl to his guys about how much of her he had seen naked.
”You don’t even like it! Why are you standing up for it?” Elizabeth continued. She had never liked the idea of Jared owning a snake, mainly because he had played pranks on them with Felix right from the beginning. Emily piped in at that point ”Come on Liz, it’s not Felix’s fault he has an extremely immature owner. I’m surprised none of you have rescued him by releasing him into the garden. To be honest she thought about doing just that every time she came over. ”I’m NOT touching that snake unless it’s absolutely necessary.” Lizzie said to her friend, walking over to sit on the tub wall because she was tired of standing.
All the while Katerina had run off in search of the dittany and had already returned with it in hand. ”Got it! Now what do I do?” She said opening the bottle and smelling the liquid inside. It honestly didn’t smell too terribly bad, unlike some magical remedies and potions. Looking at her friend she felt bad for her. Aiden seeing her naked and then falling on top of him while still naked. ”Well look on the brightside, now you can always let the snake go while HE’S in the shower and go and try and rescue HIM. She said with a wink as she tried to cheer up her friend. Honestly that didn’t sound like a bad idea having a shower with Jo-JUSTIN naked. She was not going down the John road…she couldn’t, Mercy would probably kill her.

"Yes, but it wasn't one of our sisters now, was it?" John pointed out. Of course, even they knew that, had it been someone they didn't like slipping into Lydia's shower, they would have beaten the shit out of them. As it were, they were close to both Aiden and Lydia, so it was all fair game. Teasing was expected and entirely called for. "This might have ruined your chances of ever getting with her though," Cailan pointed out from the top of the stairs.
"Yeah, she seemed pretty pissed at you. She probably hates you now," Eric pointed out. "So you should probably rethink any of your plans to finally ask her out this year. She might throw more soap in your face." Both Eric and Cailan laughed while Jared and John slipped into their room to finish packing.
Sophia sighed as Lizzie got on her case. "Elizabeth... it's not the snake's fault," she said, agreeing with Emily. "Just give it here, stand back, and watch," Sophia instructed Kat, taking the essence of dittany and dabbing it onto the cut on Lydia's cut. Honestly, Kat's joke cheered her up some and she gave a tearful smile, sniffing. "That actually sounds like a good idea," she admitted. The cut on her forehead was now starting to mend as the essence of dittany seeped into it. After just a few, short moments, the cut was completely sealed up, leaving behind nothing but smooth skin. "There..." Sophia said, stepping back. "Now you girls better hurry up and finish getting ready. You have a train to catch." Closing up the bottle, Sophia left the girls to it, knowing that Lydia was in good hands. "Ughhhh... I don't even want to go out there and look at any of those stupid boys. Can I just like out the rest of my life in your bathroom?" Mercy shrugged her shoulders. "Sure, but it's a pretty shitty place to live," she said with a smile, pun intended.

Killian laughed right along with the other guys, the feeling of guiltiness slowly receding as he found the humor in the incident. No one got seriously injured anyways. ”Yeah Aids, you’ll probably need to watch your back for a while to make sure she doesn’t curse you or something.” He added slapping Aiden on the back before following John and Jared into their room to shove everything he owned unceremoniously into his trunk. His owl, Wilson, was off last minute mouse hunting and his cage sat empty in front of the open window.
”Ha ha ha you guys are so funny! I don’t see you with a girlfriend Hairy Butthole.” Aiden said shoving Eric into his room. His mood was lightening though and he no longer felt annoyed with his friends. ”Speaking of badges, have you seen my badges? I swore they were in one of my socks in my trunk but I went through them when I was looking for that damn snake.” He sat beside his trunk and began looking through his socks again just to make sure he hadn’t over looked them.
”I still don’t think he should have it in the house.” Lizzie grumbled from where she sat on the tub, Emily shook her head at her, stood up and gave her a little shove so that she toppled backwards into it. ”Hey! That wasn’t funny!” She said climbing out of the tub as Emily giggled and ran out of the bathroom, the excitement from earlier having dissipated. Katerina however was watching intently as Sophia put the dittany on Lydia’s cut and was fascinated by how quickly it healed in front of her eyes. Unable to help herself she poked her friends now smooth forehead as Sophia left and asked ”Does it even hurt anymore?” She was going to need to get her hands on some of that stuff.

"Ouch!" Lydia complained, rubbing the spot where Kat had poked her and swatting her hand away. "The cut doesn't hurt anymore, but that poke did!" She sighed and backed away from Kat before she could poke her again. "You should probably get dressed, unless you plan on heading to King's Cross naked... I mean, Aiden might like that, but some people might find it a little promiscuous," Mercy said, heading toward the bathroom door.
After James managed to comfortably fit all of their trunks into the back of the car, all thirteen of them climbed into the shiny, new Expedition, an SUV that should have only had the capacity to carry seven people at the most. Absolutely nobody was willing to sit in front of John, Jared, and Killian, but the three managed to grab the seats behind Elizabeth and Emily. Though Lydia had been hoping to sit all the way in back, she, Mercy, and Kat wound up sitting behind John, Jared, and Killian while Eric, Cailan, and Aiden took up the back row.
Lydia's neck felt hot and she feared that Aiden might be staring at her, but she didn't dare turn around to look at him. She'd done everything within her power to avoid looking or speaking to him all morning, after what had happened in the bathroom. She'd even gone out of her way to wear clothes that weren't too revealing, but she still felt naked. Ugh, she just wanted to crawl into a hole and die. It didn't help that John, Jared, and Killian kept making hissing noises at her and Aiden. Luckily, she was in the best spot to flick all three of them in the back of the head. It was a rather noisy ride considering all of the chit chat, fighting, arguing, and the owls hooting, but they made it to King's Cross Station in one piece.
Even as they loaded their trunks and belongings onto trolleys, Lydia still refused to acknowledge Aiden. Making their way through the hustle and bustle of the station, it wasn't long before they passed through the wall between platforms nine and ten. The sight before them was all too familiar by now: steam billowing from the crimson Hogwart's Express, friends being reunited after a long summer apart, tearful mothers hugging their children goodbye.
Lydia's eyes swept through the faces, searching. She'd hardly seen her mother all summer, but the woman had promised she would meet her at the train station to say goodbye. "Do you see her anywhere?" she asked Kat and Mercy. Mercy had already been looking around for Lydia's mother as well, knowing how important the woman's promise had been. She'd missed out on seeing Lydia off quite a few times already. "Boys, help me get the girls' trunks onto the train," James said, lifting Mercy's trunk with Eric. "Why can't they get their own trunks?" John protested as Sophia's phone rang and she stepped away momentarily to take the call. Seeing the look his father gave him though, John promptly shut his mouth and grabbed Kat's trunk along with Cailan.
After a few moments, Sophia came back, stuffing her phone into her purse with a rather grim expression. Lydia's heart sank at the sight of her and she had a feeling she knew what was coming. "That was your mother Lydia. She says she sorry, but she won't be able to make it and she'll see you when you come home for Christmas," Sophia said, not at all pleased by this news, but refraining from voicing her opinion for Lydia's sake. "She didn't want to talk to me?" Lydia asked, her throat feeling tight. She was doing everything she could to not look hurt or upset... a difficult task when your mother has disappointed you for the trillionth time. "I'm sorry sweetheart, she said she had to get going."
"Oh... right." When Sophia pulled her into a hug, she relished in her warmth... the sort of warmth her mother no longer gave her. There had once been a time that Lydia's life had been perfect... until her father up and left when she was five years old and her mother slowly started to distance herself from her only child. It was heartbreaking, really. "I'm sure she feels bad for missing out." It wasn't the first time Sophia had to make excuses for Lydia's mother. The two had been best friends, along with Aiden's mother, all throughout their years at Hogwarts, but Sophia was always rather displeased with the neglect her mother showed her. Lydia had even overheard her complaining to James about her concerns and how she often considered allowing Lydia to just move in with them. "I'm sure she's really beating herself up over it," Lydia responded in a rather monotone voice, her heart feeling as if it were tearing in two as Sophia pulled away.
"Don't any of you forget to write and keep up with your classes. I don't want to hear about anyone failing anything," she said, going around and giving each of them a tight hug. When it came to John, Jared, and Killian, who were now done helping with the trunks, she stopped for a moment. "And for the love of God, would the three of you just try to stay out of trouble this year? I don't want to have to send any more howlers," she begged.
"Why do you worry about us so much? You act like we're awful children," Jared smirked, prompting Sophia to sigh. James made sure to say his goodbyes as well, hugging each of the girls and giving the boys a firm handshake and clap on the shoulder. "Gryffindor had better win that Qudditch Cup this year, you hear?" he asked Aiden, Eric, Cailan, Lydia, Mercy, and John. Looking over at Emily and Elizabeth though, he quickly tried to cover up his favoritism. "Or... or Ravenclaw... Either way, I'll be happy," he insisted, though he then turned to the others and mouthed "Gryffindor had better win" to them. "James..." Sophia said, shooting him a look. Mercy's eyes, meanwhile, were scanning the crowd for a certain face as everyone was starting to climb onto the train.

Katerina sat in the middle of Mercy and Lydia in the car, it was actually her normal place among her friends especially when Athena wasn't there. When they first got in and Cailan, Eric and Aiden filed into the row behind them Kat had taken Lydia's hand and squeezed it just to let her know she would be okay. Yes, what had happened to her that morning was mortifying but she would get over it soon enough...especially when that got to school and she was running into Aiden all the time.
Of course, John, Jared and Killian weren't going to let her get over it that quickly and kept turning around and hissing at her in an obnoxious manner...except all Kat could think was how annoying it was that John had to look so damn good. Didn't he know she was trying desperately to ignore his charm? And that was mainly because he was such a womanizer. And because Mercy would probably freak out. But could she help it that somewhere between hating him because he was a nasty boy and now she had become attracted to him? No. But she tried to hide that attraction with her relationship with Justin, a guy she didn't even really like. He had just seemed nice and a good fake relationship type of boyfriend, not that he knew that was what she was doing.
Aiden was doing his best to not stare in Lydia's direction...but seeing as his was sitting right behind her it was hard not to look at the back of her head. He felt horrible about what had happened, but even he was beginning to see the humor in the situation. Especially since Sophia had been able to fix up her head in no time. His mind was more on that years Quidditch season that anything else though, already wondering how many hours of practice he would be able to squeeze out of the team without breaking them. They needed all the practice they could get in order to dominate that season.
Of course, as soon as they got onto the platform Killian began looking for a familiar face. Cian, who Killian swore was his future girlfriend (once she actually said yes to him), was the one girl Killian had been actively pursuing since the first time he ran into her, literally, in the hallway and knocked all of her books onto the floor. When he didn't see her right away he reluctantly began helping with the trunks. Picking up Mercy's he made a show of carrying it. "Geez Mercy, did you pack your entire closet into this thing? You would have been better off adding an undetectable extension charm to this."
Elizabeth and Emily laughed although their trunks were likely to be just as heavy. Meanwhile Kat was worried about the fact that Lydia's mother had failed to show up once again. Sometimes she even forgot that Lydia had a mother because they never saw her...much like Kat and Emily's own mother who had abandoned them as soon as she had found out that Eli was a warlock and that her children were likely to take after him and go to this magical school called Hogwarts. But unlike Kat, Lydia actually knew her mother, so it made it all that much harder.
As Sophia was giving her regular spiel about making sure to write, and telling the guys not to get into trouble, Katerina noticed the way Mercy was scanning the crowd and knew instantly who she was looking for. And as if he knew she was looking for him Keiran suddenly appeared in a gap in the crowd, his sister Athena right beside him. They both had smiles on their faces as they noticed their friends, and they waved, but kept their distance because of how James thought of them.
Honestly it hurt Athena a little that Mercy's parents didn't accept her. It was one thing for her parents not to accept her, she didn't fit their mold of a "perfect" child, Keiran fit it a little more than she did but even he didn't fit it as well as their brother Roland. But having the Scarborough's not accept her? That definitely stung. Not being accepted because of who your parents were definitely had been a big pill to swallow her first year in Hogwarts when she had been sorted into Gryffindor instead of Slytherin.
"Come on we should probably get our trunks and stuff on the train before it leaves us. They'll catch up to us later." Athena said, obviously wishing she didn't have to stay separated from her friends when their parents were around. Keiran gave Mercy one last wistful look, obviously trying to tell her that he hated having to stay away from her, before he helped Athena load their trunks.

"Why? Are you too weak to carry it? I'm sure I could get a first year to do it instead..." Mercy said, shooting Killian a look. The moment her ble eyes finally found Keiran, the color rose in her cheeks and the corners of her lips twitched into the slightest of smiles. She was never entirely sure what to refer to Keiran as... her boyfriend? They weren't exactly exclusive, but that wasn't entirely by choice. She didn't want to hide her relationship with him, but she knew that her father would probably have a heart attack. He'd been keeping an even closer eye on her since that day in Diagon Alley. Hell, he was probably even reading her letters now. When glanced suspiciously in the direction she was looking, a stony expression crossed his face at the sight of the Slaters. Mercy hastily averted her gaze, but he had already seen.
"You lot had better get your asses on the train. Looks like it's getting ready to leave," James said, just in time for the train whistle to start blowing. The conductor was calling everyone on and parents rushed to get in one last hug and goodbye. Many students were already on board, hanging out the windows to say goodbye. "We'll see you at Christmas," Sophia said, trying not to get emotional as she gave Mercy and Elizabeth one last hug, at the same time. For a moment, Mercy was afraid her mother wasn't going to let go.
"Mercy," James said, grabbing his eldest daughter's arm before she could follow the other onto the train. It didn't take a genius to figure out what he was going to say to her. "I know dad," she said, pressing her lips into a firm line. "You don't have to say it again. I get it, okay? God forbid I find a boyfriend that I actually like." If she sounded bitter, that's because she was. "You're fifteen. You don't need a boyfriend. You need an education and a chastity belt."
"DAD."
"I'm just saying, Mercy. I don't want you to get hurt. That family is bad news."
"Did you ever think that maybe Keiran and Athena aren't like their parents? So maybe you shouldn't judge them based on the actions of their parents." Mercy snapped, pulling her arm out of his grasp and storming away without another word. James stepped forward, as if to go an stop her, his mouth opening to say something else.
"Don't," Sophia said, placing a hand on his shoulder. "She's not listening," James insisted, shooting his wife a look. "And neither are you. Don't you think you're being a little hard on her?"
"No. You know just as well as I do what the Slaters are capable of. I don't want her mixed up in all of that."
"Just leave her be, James."
"She's not going to date that boy."
"You know she'll find a way."
"That's what I'm afraid of," he said, watching as Mercy climbed onto the train along with the others.
Seeing Mercy being chastised, Lydia said goodbye to Sophia one last time before climbing onto the train and waiting for Mercy with Kat. The train was starting to move and Mercy hopped on before it could pick up speed. "What was that about?" Lydia asked Mercy, arching a brow. This was a useless question; of course she already knew what it was about. "He just won't get off of his high horse. Keiran and Athena have never done anything to deserve his treatment of them."
Lydia was nodding in agreement, but stopped when she heard a hissing noise behind her. Turning to see exactly who it was, she was furious to see that the guys had let Jacob in on the story. "Hey... hey, Lydia," Jake said, trying to breathe, struggling to breathe because he was laughing so hard. "Have you seen my snake? I think I've lost it and I heard you and Aiden are great at catching snakes together." This prompted a roar of laughter from Cailan, John, Jared, and Eric. Lydia was about to go for her wand, but Mercy grabbed her arm to stop her. "It's not worth it... let's just go find a carriage."
"Kat, wait," Eric said, jogging up to her and trying to stifle his laughter. "We're about to have the meeting for the prefects. We're going to need you. It shouldn't take long."
"Go. We'll save a spot for you," Mercy insisted, taking Lydia by the arm and dragging her away to find Keiran and Athena before she could even attempt to curse the guys. Mercy knew full well that her friend would do it too. It didn't take long to find Keiran and Athena long at all. The group usually tried to grab a train car in the same place every year. Sliding into the train car, a black shadow darted in through the door right behind her and Nox immediately jumped into Keiran's lap. Calypso chased in after her and Nox started to swat at her playfully with her paw.
Setting aside her frustrations with her father, Mercy's face brightened at the sight of her other best friend and her kind of, sort of boyfriend. "You're not going to believe what happened to Lydia today," Mercy said, sitting next to Keiran.
"Jesus, Mercy!" Lydia complained. "You don't even say hello. You just start spewing off the single, most embarrassing moment moment of my life. Do we really have to talk about it?" Lydia sat next to Athena, glaring at Mercy. "Lydia, they're going to find out anyway. Wouldn't you want to have them hear it from us as opposed to one of the guys?"
"UGH!" Lydia groaned, knowing she was right and sliding down in her seat while Mercy told Keiran and Athena about what happened with the snake.

For a moment Katerina wished that her own father and step mother were there to see them get onto the train, mainly because she would love to give her father and Elyse a hug. At least she had a step mother who treated her and Emily like they were her own children and not some other woman’s. Without her, the two girls would have been lost when it came to anything feminine. Instead she did the next best thing and gave Sophie a big gigantic hug. It was this time of year that family matters really got to her. She was definitely writing a letter home as soon as they were settled into their dormitory.
”I’ll make sure they write at least once a week, I’ll make Mercy sit down with me while I’m writing mine to Mom and Dad that way she can’t forget.” She told Sophia before letting go and hopping on the train after Lydia. Kat glanced back to see what was keeping Mercy only to see her father giving her a talk. She was almost positive she knew what he was telling her too. Good thing she had gotten on the train when she had or else she’d probably be butting into the conversation just to tell him that he was wrong about Keiran and Athena. Something that she had tried telling her father many times over as well.
When Mercy finally climbed aboard she confirmed Kat’s assumption of the conversation. ”Figures, that’s been their favorite topic of conversation lately. Like we’d ever actually listen though.” Kat said just as Jake came up behind Lydia making snake noises. ”You guys are so pathetic I swear! Why don’t y’all find someone else to go bother for a while.” She said sighing and throwing a look their way. They just didn’t know when to give things a rest. She was about to follow Mercy and Lydia towards their usual train car when Eric stopped her. Oh, yeah, she was a prefect now. Giving her friends one last glance as they promised to save her a spot she followed Aiden and Eric to the prefects car.
Keiran and Athena had already found the ideal cabin in their usual train car, it was the biggest one and would easily fit all of them without anyone having to sit on the floor like the year before last…that had turned into a bit of a nightmare. As Mercy and Lydia came in Keiran’s face lit up and he moved over so that Mercy could sit beside him. He may or may not have down the whole yawning move where he put his arm on the back of the chair behind her as well. Athena moved over as well to let Lydia sit next to her as Mercy practically burst out that something interesting had happened to Lydia.
Looking over at her friend Athena grinned at Lydia’s reaction. ”Okay now I absolutely MUST know, especially if it’s getting that kind of reaction out of her. Don’t tell me that they kissed and I missed it!” Athena said, looking from Mercy and Lydia waiting for one of them to tell her the news. Meanwhile Keiran was sitting there staring at Mercy’s profile and wishing that he could just kiss her right then.
