"Just go, already," Mercy said, rolling her eyes. "If you like him so much and you're tired of waiting for him to ask you out, then just ask him out yourself."
Lydia shot a sharp look at Mercy, turning her gaze away from the object of her affections as he was getting up and leaving the great hall. "Really? Aren't you being a little hypocritical?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Keiran's sitting right over at the Slytherin table, Merc, why don't you go tell him that you want to be exclusive?"
"That's... that's different..." Mercy said, cheeks flushing.
"Isn't."
"Is."
"Whatever. But we're not talking about me right now. Go ask him out or ask him to the dance or something. You've been crushing on him so hard for years and he obviously isn't taking the hint that you like him, so just go and ask him out."
"Who's asking who out?"
Mercy shot John a dark look as he squeezed into the spot across from them. "Nobody was talking to you," Mercy said to her brother, scowling as he reached across the table and took her plate to eat what she hadn't finished. It was a wonder Mercy and Lizzie hadn't starved, living with brothers that ate the way they did. "You're talking to me now. Who's asking who out?" Ever since John and Kat had become a bit of an item, John had been butting into many conversations like this, much to Mercy's displeasure. Of course Mercy loved her brother and her best friend... but she did worry that John might take advantage of Kat. She'd already given John an earful on this, but other than that... she wasn't going to stand in their way. She wanted both of them to be happy, after all. She was just going to beat the shit out of John if he messed with Kat's heart.
"Nobody is asking anyone out," Lydia said, throwing a look at John who quickly caught on. A devilish smile crossed his face. "You're thinking about asking Aiden out, aren't you?" Lydia's face reddened and she wished she could just wipe that damn grin off of John's face. "No! Now would you shut up?" she hissed, looking around to see if anyone heard him. Eric and Cailan were still finishing up their dinner a little farther down the table. If they heard, they would definitely say something to Aiden.
"Listen, Lydia," John said, brows knitting together as he looked at her plate. "Are you going to eat that?" She shook her head and he proceeded to take what was left of her desert. "Anyway, just do it. There's no point in waiting. You could get hit by an asteroid tomorrow and you know what's going to happen? You're going to regret never having asked Aiden out."
"I'm pretty sure I'm not going to regret anything. I'll just be dead."
"Take it from a love expert..." he said, ignoring her comment. "I was lost... and I had no intention of ever asking Kat out. I didn't have the guts. But when I finally did... well, I'm the happiest man alive now. You won't see me regretting anything when I get hit with an asteroid." He winked at Kat, making both Mercy and Lydia want to gag.
"You weren't saying that yesterday when you were complaining about having to get a new tie because Kat wants you to match her dress at the dance," Mercy pointed out with a smirk.
"Would you shut up?" John said to his sister through gritted teeth, throwing a bit of a "whoops" look at Kat. Lydia just sighed. "Just go do it," Mercy insisted, poking her in the side. "Yeah, do it," John agreed with his sister for once.
"I don't know what we're talking about, but you should go do it," Jared said, sitting down on her other side. Turning to shoot him a look, Lydia jumped when she came face to face with Felix. "JARED!" she complained, pulling back. "People are trying to eat here!" Mercy argued. Jared just ignored her though.
"Just do it," John and Jared insisted. "I hate you guys," Lydia said with a sigh, getting up from the table. She hadn't really eaten much... she'd been too busy thinking about a certain someone. "Does that mean you're going to ask him?" Mercy called to her as she and Jared leaned back to watch her go. John on the other hand, took the opportunity to take what was left of Mercy's pumpkin juice. Lydia just waved her hand at them, twisting around to give them a look.
Once outside of the Great Hall, Lydia looked around to see if Aiden was still there, but figured that he was already on his way back to the common room. Despite the pounding in her heart, she figured Mercy was right, even if she wouldn't take her own advice. Why should she wait around for him to ask her out? There was nothing wrong with her being the one to ask him. Ever since the day he helped her up to the hospital wing, after totally owning Marc, Lydia felt as though something had changed between them anyway. It was more like she was starting to realize that maybe… just MAYBE there was a chance that Aiden felt the same way about her.
It was certainly starting to look that way. Both of them were becoming a little more confident and open with their flirting, and yet neither of them had actually stepped up to do anything about it yet. Well… that was about to change… maybe. Lydia still hadn’t really decided if she was going to ask him. Okay, she had, but she was doing her best not to chicken out.
Dinner was only just coming to an end, so students were only just starting to slowly trickle out of the Great Hall. That being said, the corridors were fairly empty with only a few students here and there. Aiden wasn’t exactly in sight, so it took a moment for her to consider which way he might have gone. Heading toward the stairs, she was lucky enough to catch sight of him on the grand staircase.
It took her a few minutes to catch up to him and, by the time she was close enough to him, they were in the seventh floor corridor, but still a little ways from the common room. She hesitated for a moment, but she knew it was a now or never sort of thing. ”Aiden!” she called to him, jogging to catch up with him. ”Wait up!”
”Not you, I don’t even know you,” she said to two other students who turned in her direction as she ran past them. She slowed as she caught up to him, taking a moment to catch her breath. Lydia was in shape, but she’d practically run up the damn steps to catch up to him.
”You heading back to the common room?” she asked before realizing this was a stupid question. ”Who am I kidding, of course you are. Walk with me.” She offered him a pretty smile that made her green eyes shimmer. ”I hear there’s ghosts around here,” she joked. As if on cue, the gray lady floated right through the wall and went right on by them. ”See? You can never be too careful. Good thing we were together.”
